Whew! What a great week: a fun trip followed by some good family time! I’ll post more about my vacation later this week, but first I wanted to share some goodies that were waiting for me in my rss feed when I got home…

KC’s Hammerpress Featured on Design*Sponge

My favorite studio here in KC had a great write-up last week on Design*Sponge. Hammerpress is a local letterpress shop that does some amazing concert posters, wedding invites, etc. I love their bold typography and use of color, but most importantly, they have a great waste-not philosophy that I can really get behind. I would kill to work there, but have settled on admiring fan in the meantime. They have an awesome new space that is open to visitors during the First Friday Art Walks if you’re in the area.

Discovered Uncut Print of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis

There are no words to describe the excitement felt when I saw this posted in Coudal Partners Blend. I remember taping the re-mastered Metropolis off of Turner Classic Movies when they released it when I was in high school. Then, while minoring in German in collage, I was able to take a class on German film history. I was already an old movie buff, but I quickly became a huge fan of German Expressionist films: particularly those of Lang. His use of lighting! The underlying political commentary! I think M is one of my favorite films, but Metropolis is a close second…if only because we’ve only seen the bits and pieces that survived. (Incidentally, the original posters for both films are pretty amazing.) I quickly calculated how long it could be before they digitally re-master this copy they found, and only hope someone discovers the original before too long.
