With the debut of Disney’s Bolt tomorrow, 3D movies are seeing a return to the Silver Screen. Although technically, the trend started this past summer, Bolt marks the beginning of Disney’s digital 3D releases for its animated films. A while back, I read an article in Variety stating that Pixar was planning to do the same. Although, I couldn’t find that article again, I did find this one about Disney’s plans that I had read around the same time last spring.

I’m curious to see where this goes and how it will affect the design industry. Admittedly gimmicky, if used effectively, it could have some really cool results. Already, Jupiter Images used it in one of their promotions this past summer. And there seems to be a resurgence of interest in ViewMaster reels. As for the movie industry, 3D movies have tended to go in cycles…and admittedly have mostly been B-movies. Conde Nast’s Graphics page has a pretty interesting timeline showcasing the cycles and movies that came from each wave. I’m actually kind of hoping that this new wave will include movies that are critical achievements as well as visually appealing/groundbreaking. If what I’ve seen of Disney’s Bolt and Rapunzel (also check out the concept art), and Pixar’s Up, are any judge, I have a feeling we’re about to be dazzled. (and possibly broke as I heard they’ll be charging more for tickets…of course.)
